Understanding The 4 C's of Ruby Gemstone

27 Jun, 2023 | Gemstone | Gem Selection

Ruby, a precious gemstone variety of corundum, is known for its vibrant shades of red. With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, it is highly durable and commonly used in traditional and contemporary jewelry. Evaluating the quality of a ruby involves considering the four main criteria known as the 4 C's: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Let's explore each of these factors to gain a better understanding of this magnificent gem.

1.      Cut

The term "cut" in gemstones encompasses various aspects, including the shape, faceting style, symmetry, proportion, and dimensions of the stone. The cut of a ruby determines the number and arrangement of its facets, as well as the quality of its polish and luster. While maximizing the weight of the rough ruby is often prioritized during cutting, the following principles are typically followed:

  • Enhancing the gem's color: Skilled gem cutters focus on maximizing the brilliance of the ruby by emphasizing its rich red color, which is highly valued.
  • Maximizing clarity and weight: Craftsmen aim to minimize the visibility of undesirable inclusions and color zoning while preserving the stone's clarity and maximizing its final weight.
  • Accommodating the desired style: Rubies are cut to showcase the desired color and style, considering consumer preferences and directions.

However, there may be instances where compromises need to be made between carat weight and color or clarity.

2.      Color

Rubies display a wide range of pink to red hues, making it challenging to precisely define their color variations. Terms like "pigeon blood rubies" have historically been used to describe the finest-quality rubies from Burma (Myanmar). Different origins, such as Mozambique or Madagascar, also produce rubies with similar premium colors referred to as pigeon's blood. Additional descriptive terms like "saffron," "pomegranate," "partridge eyes," and "china rose" have been used to classify ruby shades, although these terms may vary locally.

The gem market now follows a more universal approach, evaluating ruby color primarily based on hue, tone, and saturation. The ideal ruby color includes vivid red, medium red to dark red, and a slight purplish undertone. Secondary hues of pink, purple, or orange may also be present. Rubies with a purplish undertone are generally preferred over orangy red-colored ones. Color assessment involves comparing rubies with master stones to determine tone and saturation accurately.

3.      Clarity

Natural rubies often contain inclusions, making it rare to find completely inclusion-free stones like fine diamonds. Inclusions vary depending on the origin and treatment of the ruby. While "eye-clean" rubies are highly valued for their clarity, showing no inclusions to the naked eye, most rubies have some degree of inclusions visible under 10x magnification.

The presence of silk inclusions can result in star rubies, which exhibit rutile needles forming a star pattern. Star rubies with higher clarity command higher value, even though they don't achieve the same clarity as faceted stones. In the market, most rubies undergo heat treatment to enhance color and clarity. The presence or absence of silk inclusions can help identify if a ruby has been heated.

4.      Carat Weight

Carat weight is an important consideration when assessing the value of a ruby gemstone. While smaller carat weights may be suitable for other gemstones, a 4-carat fine-quality natural ruby is considered significant and highly sought after by collectors. The price per carat of a ruby increases as the carat weight increases.

Fine-quality rubies with a weight of over one carat are rare and therefore expensive. As a result, these rubies are not typically cut to calibrated sizes to avoid significant weight loss. Commercial-quality rubies, on the other hand, are available in a wide range of sizes and may be cut to standard calibrated sizes.

Understanding the 4 C's of ruby gemstones is crucial for making informed decisions when purchasing or evaluating these exquisite gems. The cut, color, clarity, and carat weight all play significant roles in determining the quality and value of a ruby. The cut affects the gem's shape, facets, and overall appearance. The color ranges from vivid red to darker tones, with secondary hues adding uniqueness. Clarity refers to the presence of inclusions, with higher clarity being desirable. Finally, the carat weight influences the rarity and price of the ruby. By considering these factors, one can appreciate the beauty and worth of this captivating gemstone.
