The Impact of Climate Change on Gemstone Formation

07 Jan, 2021 | Gemstone | Gem Selection

Most gems from within the Earth, naturally, like minerals. Most form as crystals, solids whose atoms are organized in highly ordered patterns of repetition, called crystal systems. There are different varieties of gemstones, and each of the gemstones is formed through a separate process which makes the original gemstone price very valuable.

The crystallization process goes through the following conditions

  • Ingredients
  • Temperature
  • Pressure
  • Time
  • Space

Gemstone Formation

In general, there are four forms gemstones can be formed.

  • Igneous- These minerals are produced deep within the Earth (Diamonds, Ruby, Sapphire, Peridot)
  • Hydrothermal- Similar to the example of rock candy, gemstones are formed when mineral-rich water bodies cool down
  • Metamorphic- These are gems, as the name implies, 'morphous' due to extreme heat and pressure. (Sapphire, Ruby, Spinel, Garnet)
  • Sedimentary- Edges created by sediment depositing water (Malachite, Azurite, Opal)

Igneous gemstone formation

Igneous gemstones are made out of the different substances contained in the Earth's mantle when magma or lava is exposed to extremely high temperatures during a volcanic eruption. Certified gemstones in India including diamonds and peridot can take millions of years to develop. Magma is a fluid that flows through the surface of the Earth, and when it is forced to change its shape and shape under high-temperature control, it results in the creation of igneous gemstone.

Hydrothermal Gemstone formation

This process most closely resembles the rock candy given above. Super filled water is forced up into the cavities and cracks in the Earth with several different minerals. The various minerals start crystallizing as this solution begins to cool.

Metamorphic gemstone production

Most gemstones are formed by metamorphism. This is when, under high pressure and heat, minerals are pushed together by tectonic plates usually moving under each other. The minerals are pulled together, and they turn into various minerals, often without melting.

Sedimentary Gemstone formation

Sedimentary gemstone formation occurs at the earth surface as the water combines with mineral. The mineral-rich water that flows down through the Earth's cracks and cavities and deposits mineral layers. Thus, minerals such as Opal, Malachite, and Azurite are formed.

During volcanic eruptions, many forms of gems come to the surface. Most of these gems arrive by mountain building and erosion to the soil.

Global warming has affected nearly every area on Earth. Glaciers are increasingly melting to the point that Antarctica has experienced a substantial loss of ice cover; cities are experiencing significant temperature shifts, etc. As described above, when magma, natural water, and the minerals of the Earth are exposed and processed under high heat and temperatures, gemstones are formed naturally. Global warming is expected to influence such factors as soil conditions, water levels and atmosphere, thus hampering natural gemstone production.
