It is numerically expressed and measures how much more heavy is the gemstone as compared with the same volume of water. Most gemstone substances are two to four times denser than an equal volume of water.

Specific gravity is an important and useful tool in the process of gemstone identification that is useful for the gem buyer as well as the gemologist selling the particular gemstone.

A 1-carat stone with higher specific gravity will be smaller than a 1-carat stone with lower specific gravity. So you should not get surprised when the sapphire you buy is smaller than your diamond.

For the gemologist, specific gravity will and should help them identify a gemstone if it isn’t obvious already. As for the gem buyer, the specific gravity can help you understand the difference in size between gemstones, even if those gemstones are the same carat

The specific gravity of Neelam, Pukhraj and Ruby is exactly 3.99. These are stones from the corundum family. Even synthetic Neelam, Pukhraj and Ruby have a specific gravity of 3.99.
