Unveiling the Mystery: How Do Sapphires Get Their Captivating Colors?

04 Jan, 2024 | Gemstone | Gem Selection

Sapphires, with their mesmerizing hues ranging from deep blues to vibrant pinks, have captivated humanity for centuries. These precious gemstones are not only a symbol of wealth and luxury but also a testament to the wonders of nature. Have you ever wondered how these exquisite gems acquire their dazzling colors? Join us on a journey deep into the heart of the earth to uncover the secrets behind the enchanting colors of sapphires.

Formation of Sapphires:

Sapphires belong to the corundum family of minerals, and their captivating colors are a result of various elements and geological processes during their formation. Corundum is composed of aluminum and oxygen atoms arranged in a hexagonal crystal lattice structure. The addition of trace elements and certain geological conditions during crystal growth contribute to the diverse spectrum of colors observed in sapphires.

The Amazing Blue Record

Sapphires have a rich and varied history; the earliest known stones were found thousands of years ago. There was a belief among the Ancient Persians that the bright blue sky was caused by sapphires, which served as a pedestal on which the Earth rested.

While sapphires are found all throughout the world, the majority of gem-quality stones that are available today come from Sri Lanka. But the Star of India, one of the most famous sapphires in history, originates from a completely different nation.

Estimates place the age of this stone at almost two billion years old, making it the largest gem-quality sapphire ever discovered. It weighs about 563 carats and has a strikingly unusual star marking across the width of its face.

Strangely, 21 of the best diamonds in the world were taken in a record-breaking heist in 1964, together with the Star of India. They were removed from the Star of India, which is still located in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

Naturally, the Star of India was among the majority of the stones that were found. The Star of India is by no means the first historically discovered sapphire to be extremely costly. A unique sapphire known as the Blue Belle of Asia brought an astounding seventeen million dollars at auction in 2014.

The enormous sapphire, which weighed about four hundred carats, was displayed with pride on a luxurious necklace made of white gold and diamonds. It was the most money ever spent on a single sapphire at an auction.

The coloring process that gives a sapphire its unique hue is rarely a flawless process, despite the fact that it may appear to be so straightforward. If all goes well, though, the sapphire will generate the most stunning bluish hues and become an instant product in demand.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the captivating colors of sapphires are a result of a delicate dance between nature's elements and geological processes. From the intense blues driven by titanium to the varied hues influenced by iron, chromium, and the Earth's own artistry, each sapphire tells a story of its formation deep within the Earth. The next time you gaze upon a sapphire, remember the intricate processes that have unfolded over millions of years to create these timeless and enchanting gems.
