Goddess Parvati's unmarried form is Maa Brahmacharini. She is the ruler of Lord Mangal, the giver of all fortunes. She carries a Kamandal and a Japa mala in her left and right hands, respectively. Brahmacharini Maa, dressed in a white saree, is said to have arrived in this avatar to do rigorous penance (Tapasya) in order to satisfy Lord Shiva, gain his attention, and marry him.

She ate Bilva leaves, flowers, fruits, and leafy vegetables for years and slept on the floor to show her tapasya. She also fasted while being out in the open during hot summers, cold winters, and severe storms. She later stopped eating and maintained her fasting without food or drink. After witnessing her perseverance, Lord Brahma blessed her, and she became Lord Shiva's consort.

It is also believed that Maa Barahmacharini's father insulted Lord Shiva, thus she immolated herself in order to have a parent who appreciates her husband in her next birth.
