Gems

Basically, a gemstone is a form of a mineral, on the other hand, the gemstone has formed crystals. Professionals cut and polish these crystals professionally to give them a shape of jewellery. The study which deals with gemstones is known as gemology. In simple words, it is a type of the study of minerals (mineralogy) in which professionals deals with the study of the physical properties of the stone. The evaluation of any gemstone depends upon on its value given by a gemologist (who studies gems). Gems are decorative as well as very beautiful stones which are precious and very valuable.

One can measure gemstones by their size, rarity and hardness. Gemstones in their unpolished form simply look like ordinary rocks. Professionals cut them and polish them to give them a brilliant and gorgeous look. Gemstones fall in two categories as semiprecious and precious stones. Some of the examples of semiprecious gemstones are garnet, opal, amethyst, citrine and turquoise. On the other hand, precious gemstones include emerald, diamond, sapphire and ruby.

Stones

The scientific term used for rocks is petrology. Understanding the stones is very important for understanding their formation as well as mineral creation of the earth. Stones are also composed of minerals and they can come in varying size. Some stones can be in the form of tiny pebbles. Unlike gems, stones do not have mineral makeup or special chemical makeup. Most of the stones are not cut or polished to make jewellery as gemstones.
