What is Krishna Janmashtami

Janmashtami is the day where people in India celebrate this greatest day with lots of devotion. This hindu festival is dedicated to Lord Krishna’s birthday celebration which is celebrated in August every year. He was a good communicator and profound influence in the epic, Mahabharata where he took Pandavas side and guided them to victory. Lord Krishna  had to be born in jail because his parents were kept in prison by his uncle, Kansa. Kansa had feared that the eighth child would be the murderer of him. Although Krishna was the eighth child, his father Vasudev saved him from the hand of cruel Kansa by giving them his son. Krishna grew up in Gokul society by his foster parents but he never felt that he was adopted by them. He showed his magical performances since kid and people soon realized that he is none other than but a god himself. He grew up to be a strong person and despite all the hurdles Krishna killed the Kansa.

Celebration of Janmashtami

Since lord krishna was born at night, the celebration generally happened at midnight. People follow a special ritual called Dahi Handi where all the excited devotees gather and make a man-made pyramid to break the jar of makkhan - the ritual which Krishna used to follow. Beside that, kids and adults lost in the enjoyment as they dressed up like Krishna, his friends and others. People do the fast and break this in midnight to seek blessings from the divine. People laugh, enjoy the ceremony with full potential. Janmashtami is also celebrated in the homes in different ways and people follow different rituals, since the pandemic hit, the devotees are scared to arrange this kind of celebration as this occasion needs much more crowd and as we are in the era of maintaining social distancing, performing Janmashtami gets almost a question. How to do the janmashtami puja?


Janmashtami is an auspicious day where you have to arrange everything through proper devotion and dedication. When you perform Krishna pooja during Janmashtami, you must buy a swig for the idol of Bal Gopal. Along with this, the other items needed like: Pooja chowki, red new cloth for the chowki, a photo or idol of Bal Gopal, asana, gangajal, ghee lamp, incense and dhoop sticks, chandan, raw rice, tulis leaves, prasadam or sweets, new clothes and ornaments for Krishna to deck him up, scent, flowers and garland. Panchamrat is necessary for this occasion which is a mixture of honey, sugar, milk, curd and ghee. On the day of pooja, wake up early, take a bath and arrange all the necessary items to start the ritual. The pooja starts early in the morning and gives the Krishna idol a sacred bath with gangajal.
